On Jan. 8, 2020, as I was parking my car, I got a long-awaited phone call from one of my son’s doctors. She informed me that our 7-month-old son, Eliot, had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a fatal neuromuscular disease. I can see my neighbor walking up her steps with groceries, a leaf falling, oblivious to the devastation below. It is caused by a genetic mutation on the X chromosome, thus the disease almost exclusively affects boys (one in 3,300). lose muscle mass and thus the ability to do basic things like run and walk.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Dr. Jason Westin regularly witnesses the power of lifesaving cancer drugs. But because generic cancer drugs are often in shortage in the United States, he says, he and his patients have been put in a terrible position. Makers of generic drugs don’t have to share information about the supply chain, so buyers currently choose based only on price. Hernandez told the Senate committee that of the top 50 generic drugs paid for by Medicare Part D, 16 were marked up 1,000% or higher. Until there is some kind of legislation that addresses drug shortages, Wosińska and the other experts agreed, they will continue.

The recent sharp drawdown in stocks presents a buying opportunity for those stocks that are positioned to withstand a double whammy of higher interest rates and an economic slowdown, according to Goldman Sachs. "Although we expect headwinds to discount rates and balance sheets to persist, we would view a substantial further downgrade to the growth outlook as a buying opportunity," David Kostin, Goldman's chief U.S. equity strategist, said in a note to clients. Therefore, Goldman believes many cyclical stocks, or those with a high sensitivity to the economy, shouldn't suffer. "We therefore remain wary of long-duration and highly levered stocks but think investors should treat cyclical sell-offs as a buying opportunity," Kostin said. Energy stocks Devon Energy and Patterson-UTI Energy also made the list.

The range and frequency of those discussions with DeSantis' campaign have not been previously reported. In addition to Carmack, the policy director, at least seven other Heritage staffers have taken positions in the DeSantis campaign. In a historic commencement address at Howard University on June 4, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson laid out the intellectual and moral basis for affirmative action. Affirmative action offered a way to take into account far-reaching differences in personal circumstances and to begin to right a historic wrong. After a brief honeymoon of public support, affirmative action was met with a powerful backlash, and the policy has been under attack ever since. The intensity and duration of the attack is sad confirmation that many Americans remain unwilling to reckon with the barbarity of our racial history. In response to Reconstruction, Southern white people developed an entirely new and mythical history of slavery, the Civil War and ultimately Reconstruction.
